Why Recycling EPS Is Important

Join The Movement

While Styrofoam (technically Expanded Polystyrene or EPS) is often viewed as a major environmental pollutant, it is actually one of the most efficient materials for building high-performance, sustainable homes.

Diverting it from landfills into construction transforms it from a "forever waste" into a "forever asset."

1. The Landfill Problem: A Passive Hazard

When Styrofoam is sent to a landfill, it becomes a permanent environmental burden.

  • Space Inefficiency: Styrofoam is 90% air but incredibly bulky. It consumes massive amounts of landfill space that could be used for biodegradable waste.
  • Non-Biodegradable: It is estimated that Styrofoam takes 500 to 1,000 years to break down. In a landfill’s anaerobic environment, it may never fully decompose.
  • Pollution Risk: Over time, it can break down into microplastics that leach into groundwater or release harmful gases like methane derivatives, contributing to ozone depletion.

2. The Home Building Solution: An Active Asset

In construction, Styrofoam is used in Insulated Compost Concrete Forms (ICCF) and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).Greenwood manufacture blocks made from 85% to 100% recycled Styrofoam diverted directly from landfills.

Extreme Resilience: Homes built with Styrofoam-concrete composites can withstand winds over 250 mph (Category 5 hurricanes) and are highly seismic-resistant. Fire & Pest Resistance as well.

(EPS), offers opportunity to lower construction costs while

Reduced Material Costs

Lower Labor and Equipment Expenses

Lower Labor and Equipment Expenses

Styrofoam is often viewed as waste, making it a low-cost or even "free" raw material when diverted from landfills. By processing this waste into structural components like Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) or composite blocks, builders can reduce the expenses associated with traditional lumber or standard masonry.

Lower Labor and Equipment Expenses

Lower Labor and Equipment Expenses

Building materials made from recycled Styrofoam are significantly lighter than traditional bricks or solid concrete blocks.

  • Ease of Handling: Workers can move and stack these materials more quickly without heavy machinery.
  • Faster Assembly: Many Styrofoam-based systems use an interlocking design (similar to LEGO bricks), which drastically speeds up the framing and insulation phases of construction.

Long-Term Energy Affordability

Lower Labor and Equipment Expenses

Long-Term Energy Affordability

For housing to be truly affordable, it must be inexpensive to maintain. Styrofoam is an exceptional thermal insulator.

  • Thermal Mass: Building blocks made with EPS help maintain consistent indoor temperatures.
  • Lower Utility Bills: Residents in these homes typically see a significant reduction in heating and cooling costs, which is a critical factor for low-income households.

Durability and Resilience

Long-Term Energy Affordability

Traditional affordable housing can sometimes suffer from mold or rot if built with lower-quality wood. Recycled Styrofoam is moisture-resistant and does not provide a food source for termites or pests. This longevity reduces the need for expensive repairs and replacements over the life of the building.

Beyond housing, this process keeps a problematic material out of the environment. Styrofoam can take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose in a landfill; repurposing it into a house effectively "locks" that carbon into a productive, long-term use.

Concrete

Our main goal is to reduce the environmental impact of construction and promote sustainable practices in the industry. We understand that construction is an essential activity in our society, but it is also one of the main sources of waste. That is why we have dedicated ourselves to offering responsible and effective solutions for concrete waste management.

We work in collaboration with local and regulatory authorities to comply with environmental standards and regulations.

We also offer high-quality recycled materials for construction, such as recycled aggregates, gravel, and sand.

Plastic

Building Materials

Concrete

Plastic recycling involves collecting, sorting, processing, and transforming plastic waste into new materials and products. While it's a crucial step in managing plastic waste, the current system has limitations, and the plastics industry's focus on increasing production without addressing the recycling market is a concern.

  • Sorting: The collected plastic is sorted by type (e.g., PET, HDPE, LDPE) and then cleaned to remove contaminants.
  • Bailing:Once sorted, the plastic is shredding/Granulated plastic is shredded or granulated to make it easier to process.
  • Washing:The shredded or granulated plastic is washed to remove any remaining dirt or contaminants.

Building Materials

  • Our primary goal is to salvage valuable materials.
  • Create new job opportunities in the building industry, as skilled labor is needed for dismantling and rebuilding  salvaged materials.
  •  Examples of Salvageable Materials:
  • Wood: Lumber, flooring, trim, doors, windows, and furniture.
  • Appliances: Refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and other kitchen and laundry appliances.
  • Plumbing and Electrical Fixtures: Faucets, sinks, tubs, light fixtures, and wiring.
  • Building Materials: Flooring, roofing materials, siding, and insulation.
  • Other: Cabinets, hardware, and architectural elements.
  • We accept new and used materials. NO TRASH MATERIALS. Example: broken lumber (used okay), appliances with missing parts etc.

Deconstruction

Building Materials

Building Materials

Residential and Commercial deconstruction is a method of carefully disassembling a building to salvage and reuse materials, rather than demolishing it. This process, sometimes called "construction in reverse," prioritizes waste reduction and sustainability by reclaiming valuable materials for future use.

When erecting a brand-new home, a growing number of environmentally conscious homeowners and builders are opting to ‘deconstruct’ the old one and donate the parts rather than demolish it.  We provide full service deconstruction service. Free Estimate.
